A newly developed approach that uses virtual reality glasses to perform lung cancer operations appears to be quite effective. Surgeons are very excited at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam because now they can operate in a far more focused way and save as much as possible on healthy lung tissue. Almost twenty patients have been treated with the procedure already.

In this technique, images from a CT scan (all different picture slices) are fused into a three-dimensional color image with special software in order to 3D visualize the lungs. Before the procedure, the surgeons study the images carefully. The images are also leading during the procedure: the anatomy of the lungs is projected on a screen and a surgeon stands at the table with VR glasses. As it were, he looks through the patient and directs his cutting colleague through the lunar.
